WELCOME

Welcome to Goblin Gathering! I have created this site to help manage and nurture my unhealthy obsession with goblins in Magic The Gathering™ It will be updated periodically as new goblin cards are released and I will aim to keep it an informative space for any players with an interest in goblin decks. I will strive to write semi-regularly but only with goblin relevant content. if you have any ideas or would like to create content for this site then you can email me at: admin@goblingathering.com If you've come this far please leave a comment on any of the articles. -Trashman

Mogg of the Month November '24: General Kreat, the Boltbringer

November has been a very good month for goblin players. With the release of Magic Foundations and Foundations: Jumpstart,  both featuring a plethora of exciting new goblin cards, it was a little difficult to pick which one to feature this month. But we can only have one, and this time around... Mogg of the Month for November 2024 is General Kreat, the Boltbringer ! This was the biggest response I have ever had from my fellow goblin players when asking who to feature as Mogg of the Month, and while there are always some great suggestions, General Kreat and one other new card really stood out. Ultimately I have decided to feature Kreat this month, but there is a very high chance that next month will also feature a new goblin card Featuring a brand new card as Mogg of the Month can leave me with little to write about, however it is clear that General Kreat is going to make waves wherever it sees play. Printed in Foundations: Jumpstart -  which is the third edition of Jumpstart -...

Goblin Foundations

Magic Foundations is a new set due to launch on November 15th. Replacing the old core set model, Foundations will remain Standard legal for the next 5 years. The set will bring 15 goblins into the Standard format, of which 4 of them are brand new goblins. This is very welcome after the last two set releases contained exactly zero goblins. Let's take a look at the new cards we're getting! Dropkick Bomber is definitely the one to watch out for in the latest release of goblin cards. A new goblin lord to bolster our armies is always welcome. This card will definitely see play in Standard, Pioneer and EDH, but also possibly Modern and Legacy. It's second ability can be viewed as both a way to give our goblins a bit of reach and evasion but also a construed sacrifice outlet. Courageous Goblin isn't as exciting. A 2/2 body for two mana is more than fair for an average goblin, but this would be better suited to decks with bigger creatures to support so the +1/+0 and Menace can ...

Mogg of the Month October '24: Sensation Gorger

So another month passes by and that means it's time for the 5th installment of Mogg of the Month. This month I have decided to feature one of the more obscure cards in our collections, but one that is certainly worthy of a slot in our commander decks Mogg of the Month for October 2024 is Sensation Gorger! Printed only once way back in 2008 as part of the Morningtide set from Lorwyn block, Sensation Gorger is a card that some goblin players may not even know about. There are two things to note about Sensation Gorger, it's insane art and it's wicked ability. First let's look at it's art. What is even going on here? It gets worse the longer you look at it! Sensation Gorger's ability is fantastic for our EDH decks with a high number of goblin cards: Kinship — At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with Sensation Gorger, you may reveal it. If you do, each player discards their hand, then draws fou...

Duskmourn: House of Zero Goblins

Another set with no goblins! Don't get me wrong. I love cliche horror tropes as much as the next guy, but surely goblins would have fit into this set somewhere. Bloomburrow was understandable, goblins aren't cute and fluffy therefore wouldn't fit into that set, but come on! Would a goblin be out of place here?  Anyway rant over. We did get a couple new lands: I doubt either will see much play in our decks other than standard. Pioneer and above already has a much better manabase available to it. The Duskmourn set and play environment however does seem exciting and a stark contrast to the fluffy wonderland of the previous one. The standard format should look amusing while people equip a chainsaw to a mouse for the next 3 years. Looks like the next set is going to be MTG Foundations, and I can only assume its going to be packed full of goblin staples to ensure that goblins become playable in standard again. -Trashman Disappointed Goblin Lord

Mogg of the Month September '24: Conspicuous Snoop

It's another month and another installment of Mogg of the Month. I could only hold off for so long before awarding it to this multi format all-star goblin... Mogg of the Month for September 2024 is Conspicuous Snoop! Printed in the M21 core set way back before the pandemic. It seems so long ago now, but Snoop is a relatively newer card compared to the multitudes of goblins available to us. Conspicuous Snoop quickly became a powerhouse in goblin decks across multiple formats. From its hilarious artwork to its powerful abilities, Snoop has earned its spot as a fan favorite and a competitive staple in the goblin tribe. Conspicuous Snoop brought something goblins didn’t have before—a balance between card advantage, board control, and combo potential. It’s no longer just about being aggressive with "8-whack" strategies; with Snoop, goblin decks can play a more calculated, midrange game, or pivot into a full-on combo deck depending on what’s needed. What Snoop did for goblin ...

Dockside Extortionist BANNED!

Today's Commander Rule Committee announcement has come as a shock to EDH players! Some of the most powerful cards in the format have been banned, including our own Dockside Extortionist. Even with multiple printings Dockside was still £70/$85+ Dockside Extortionist has been an absolute powerhouse and became a regular staple card in every competitive deck that could play it. Now it seems it's glory days are over. A 1/2 goblin pirate that creates treasure tokens equal to the number of artifacts and enchantments your opponents control, which could easily provide an advantage for the rest of the game, all for just 2 mana. It's no suprise that this card became the most expensive goblin card in Magic. Some other staple cards banned in this announcement are the ever popular Mana Crypt and Jewelled Lotus, each costing £80/$100+ Nadu being banned in yet another format comes as no suprise There will be, no doubt, many cEDH players whose decks have just lost 3 very strong cards plus a...

Mogg of the Month August '24: Goblin Wizard

This is the third installment of our new monthly feature where we pick out a goblin card from among the hundreds available to us in Magic the Gathering™. We've done a brand new card, we've done an older iconic card, this time we're going to look at one of only two goblins to appear on the infamous Reserved List. Mogg of the Month for August 2024 is Goblin Wizard! Goblin Wizard holds a peculiar spot in the ranks of goblin cards. Once upon a time it was the most overpowered goblin in all of Magic. These days it has been overshadowed by cards like Muxus and Goblin Lackey.  No longer seeing play in even Legacy or Vintage decks, it is only really played in goblin tribal EDH lists. The Wizard offers a unique ability of being able to put any goblin from your hand into play at instant speed and can also grant protection from white, which is super relevant in EDH due to the massive prevalence of white board wipes in the format. Possibly the most expensive goblin card (with the exc...

DECK TECH: Goblin Synthesizer [Pauper]

Hello goblin enthusiasts! Welcome to another new feature of Goblin Gathering. We are going to start posting goblin brews and deck lists. This first feature will be a pauper deck based off of the popular and well-perfoming Mono-Red Synthesizer list. I already wrote about this deck back in April (2024)  when it first immerged and posted strong results in the pauper meta. The deck has had a few name changes since inception, first it was simply "Burn" then "Mono-Red Synthesizer" and now people are calling it "Mono-Red Kuldotha"  As strong a deck that it is, featuring 12 - 16 goblins, as a goblin purist I had issues with the inclusion of non-goblin creatures. So naturally I have cut some things and swapped in some more goblin centric cards. Take a look at the changes below: Left: my new goblin list. Right: the current tier 1 list As you can see the changes aren't major, and I will explain why I have made them. Number 1: Cut Voldaren Epicure and added Sarpa...

No Blooming Goblins

A Magic the Gathering™ set with no goblins? Bloomburrow seems to be becoming an incredibly popular set for drafting. Flooding the standard carpool with cute fuzzy critters that will now stick around for another three years. But for goblin players the set seems lackluster. After researching the set for new goblin cards I was left disappointed. Even the sets two changeling creatures do absolutely nothing for us. What about support cards? Anything that allows us to "choose a creature type"? Well there is one standout card, a land that falls somewhere between Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Gaea's Cradle Three Tree City looks like the one card in this set that goblin players can get excited about. Possibly a bit slow for Legacy or Modern, but certainly playable in Pioneer and EDH. Otherwise a disappointing set.  Have you seen a card in Bloomburrow that I have missed? Leave a comment below

Mogg of the Month July '24: Goblin Matron

Last month our brand new feature showcased a brand new card. This month it seemed right to feature an older card, so without further ado: Mogg of the Month for July 2024 is Goblin Matron! How could it not be?  This is one of, if not the most iconic goblin cards in all of Magic the Gathering™. First printed in 7th Edition then Urzas Saga, Matron has been a staple of goblin decks ever since. Initially only available to Vintage and Legacy decks, it wasn't legal in Modern until it was reprinted in Modern Horizons 1 in 2019. Since then it has enabled goblin decks to move away from the fast and aggressive "8-whack" style decks and into the more interactive midrange and combo builds. A guaranteed "4 of" in every goblin deck. Goblin Matron allows us to search our library for any goblin card. It could be a combo piece, a silver bullet to get us out of a sticky situation, a lord effect or Ringleader, or even another Goblin Matron. Always finding exactly what we need for j...

Mogg of the Month June '24: Mogg Mob

Mogg of the Month will be an ongoing feature of Goblin Gathering going forward. Each month either members of the goblin community or I will pick out a goblin card and declare it Mogg of the Month. The cards can be picked out for any reason and don't need to meet any criteria other than the obvious "it's a goblin". This means it could be a brand new card like this month's pick, an older card that has seen play in thousands of decks, or an obscure forgotten card that you may never have heard of. So without further ado.. Mogg of the Month: June 2024 - Mogg Mob This very first edition of Mogg of the Month is awarded to the brand new Mogg Mob as chosen by followers on our Facebook page.  For such a new card to be chosen there isn't a whole lot to write about besides what we see on the card and what we might expect from it. Until it starts being seen in top goblin decks we won't know how well it performs. But let us have a look; A 3/3 body for three red mana wit...

UPDATED: Mogg Horizons

UPDATE: More cards have been added to this list and some rumoured cards confirmed. Modern Horizons 3 is on its way next month! While a lot of cards have been leaked and rumoured about, here is a rundown on some of the confirmed goblins in the next "straight to modern" set! Warren Soultrader is a new sac outlet. It allows us to sacrifice a creature and pay 1 life to create a treasure. Arguably worse than Skirk Prospector as it is also costing us a life point but good in that we can make any colour mana with the treasure. It has already been broken as a combo piece in Zombie decks but goblins could maybe go down the Revel in Riches combo route. Skoa, Embermage seems incredibly underpowered at 6 mana. Muxus is 6 mana and brings an awful lot more value to a game than Skoa. It is notably at common rarity so there may be a way to slot him into a pauper deck but currently the goblin community is not impressed with this goblin wizard. Mogg Mob will certainly see play in any decks tha...

"Mind Goblin" banned

Legacy all-star goblin banned! The card in question, which goes by many names, was hit by a blanket ban which covered a wide selection of cards from the Unfinity set:

Another Goblin Secret Lair

Another goblin secret lair is on the way! Featuring yet another unique card style, this time themed to look like Instagram posts. We are getting 5 new versions of actually playable goblins, which is great!

Goblins are making a blast in pauper

Some of the newer goblin cards have been making a big impact on the pauper metagame. To such a degree that the main Burn deck in the format has been completely rebuilt to include some otherwise overlooked critters.

New Krenko card!

Krenko, Baron of Tin Street is an all new version of our beloved boss. Krenko has gone from a Mob Boss, to a Kingpin in War of the Spark, and now has title of Baron in Murders at Karlov Manor. The new card fits into the long running theme of goblins breaking artifacts, and the two effects on the Baron work really well together. In modern and legacy formats we have Treasure tokens, Aether Vials and Chrome Mox that we can sacrifice to put +1/+1 counters on our board but where this card will really shine is in commander where run many more artifacts and can sacrifice our early mana rocks for late game buffs. The Baron pairs really nicely with Crime Novelist from the same set. Novelist will create the red mana required to pay for the Barons second ability. Wether it be in prerelease, draft or standard these two are going to pair really well together. There may even be a combo discovered yet using Sword of the Meek in modern. Leave a comment if you think you can find a w...

Legacy: Turbo Sticker Muxus

Turbo Stickers is the current best performing goblin deck in Legacy and thanks to the recent addition of Broadside Bombardiers, it is one of the strongest decks in the format right now. There are obviously different takes on building this but the core of the deck is playing fast mana such as Ancient Tomb, City of Traitors and Chrome Mox to cast a "_________ Goblin" as early as possible to make enough mana to cast a turn one or two Muxus. You can see an example build here Key cards: Muxus is the end goal of our deck. Resolving one early enough in a game can completely overwhelm our opponent and will often cause our opponent to scoop up their cards there and then.  _________ Goblin, "Name Sticker" Goblin or Mind Goblin. This joke of a card goes by a few names and shouldn't really be legal in legacy but it is. It reads differently on MTGO and paper but in both cases it is used to ramp us into Muxus or other spells. Broadside Bombardiers is the newest addition to ...
