Goblins are making a blast in pauper

Some of the newer goblin cards have been making a big impact on the pauper metagame. To such a degree that the main Burn deck in the format has been completely rebuilt to include some otherwise overlooked critters.

The main enabler of this new build is Goblin Tomb Raider, which given the right opening hand is as strong as Goblin Guide without giving our opponent a free land draw. In pauper we can play a Great Furnace artifact land on turn one and drop a hasty 2/2 Tomb Raider straight away! Even if it's not our opening play there are 16 ways we can put an artifact on to the battlefield to ensure when he lands, Tomb Raider is ready to strike

Goblin Blast-Runner is the oldest of the new cards in the deck as it was printed in Brothers War in 2022. This former sleeper now synergises amazingly with many other cards in our deck which can be sacrificed to give him the +2/+0 and menace.

This one isn't a new card at all. Goblin Bushwhacker has been a solid support piece for over 10 years. It was played in Standard decks when it was first printed. It was played in Modern 8-Whack Goblins up until MH1 gave us the required cards to play more midrange cards like Matron, Sling-gang and Munitions Expert. It has now found it's home in a solid pauper deck where it really does put in some work.

It was the printing of Goblin Tomb Raider that caused the new Burn deck to to become what it has been in recent months, now more artifact focused than before. Running 4 copies each of Experimental Synthesiser and Implement of Combustion to support the Kuldotha Rebirths and Galvanic Blasts.
The deck shook up the whole format and at one point held 17% of the meta. This has since dropped as other decks have adapted to combat this.

But a brand new goblin has arrived that may just push the deck back to the top...

The newest addition, Reckless Lackey, slots right into the list and synergises amazingly with multiple other cards in the deck.
First of all: Haste and First strike on a 1/2 body for 1 mana is strong on its own, but the additional ability is what helps it push the deck that little bit further.
Sacrificing it draws a card and creates a treasure token artifact which helps Tomb Raider, Galvanic Blast and Kuldotha Rebirth AND the act of it being sacrificed sets up Blast-Runner.

The deck looks to be in a really solid position at the moment and I can only expect to see it posting good results in the weeks to come.
You can find a full deck list here

  1. UPDATE: It's been a week since I wrote this and predicted Reckless Lackey would push Burn up the meta share. Today Burn stands at 26% up from 17%

Welcome to Goblin Gathering! I have created this site to help manage and nurture my unhealthy obsession with goblins in Magic The Gathering™ It will be updated periodically as new goblin cards are released and I will aim to keep it an informative space for any players with an interest in goblin decks. I will strive to write semi-regularly but only with goblin relevant content. if you have any ideas or would like to create content for this site then you can email me at: admin@goblingathering.com If you've come this far please leave a comment on any of the articles. -Trashman

Goblin Foundations

Magic Foundations is a new set due to launch on November 15th. Replacing the old core set model, Foundations will remain Standard legal for the next 5 years. The set will bring 15 goblins into the Standard format, of which 4 of them are brand new goblins. This is very welcome after the last two set releases contained exactly zero goblins. Let's take a look at the new cards we're getting! Dropkick Bomber is definitely the one to watch out for in the latest release of goblin cards. A new goblin lord to bolster our armies is always welcome. This card will definitely see play in Standard, Pioneer and EDH, but also possibly Modern and Legacy. It's second ability can be viewed as both a way to give our goblins a bit of reach and evasion but also a construed sacrifice outlet. Courageous Goblin isn't as exciting. A 2/2 body for two mana is more than fair for an average goblin, but this would be better suited to decks with bigger creatures to support so the +1/+0 and Menace can ...

Mogg of the Month November '24: General Kreat, the Boltbringer

November has been a very good month for goblin players. With the release of Magic Foundations and Foundations: Jumpstart,  both featuring a plethora of exciting new goblin cards, it was a little difficult to pick which one to feature this month. But we can only have one, and this time around... Mogg of the Month for November 2024 is General Kreat, the Boltbringer ! This was the biggest response I have ever had from my fellow goblin players when asking who to feature as Mogg of the Month, and while there are always some great suggestions, General Kreat and one other new card really stood out. Ultimately I have decided to feature Kreat this month, but there is a very high chance that next month will also feature a new goblin card Featuring a brand new card as Mogg of the Month can leave me with little to write about, however it is clear that General Kreat is going to make waves wherever it sees play. Printed in Foundations: Jumpstart -  which is the third edition of Jumpstart -...

Duskmourn: House of Zero Goblins

Another set with no goblins! Don't get me wrong. I love cliche horror tropes as much as the next guy, but surely goblins would have fit into this set somewhere. Bloomburrow was understandable, goblins aren't cute and fluffy therefore wouldn't fit into that set, but come on! Would a goblin be out of place here?  Anyway rant over. We did get a couple new lands: I doubt either will see much play in our decks other than standard. Pioneer and above already has a much better manabase available to it. The Duskmourn set and play environment however does seem exciting and a stark contrast to the fluffy wonderland of the previous one. The standard format should look amusing while people equip a chainsaw to a mouse for the next 3 years. Looks like the next set is going to be MTG Foundations, and I can only assume its going to be packed full of goblin staples to ensure that goblins become playable in standard again. -Trashman Disappointed Goblin Lord

Dockside Extortionist BANNED!

Today's Commander Rule Committee announcement has come as a shock to EDH players! Some of the most powerful cards in the format have been banned, including our own Dockside Extortionist. Even with multiple printings Dockside was still £70/$85+ Dockside Extortionist has been an absolute powerhouse and became a regular staple card in every competitive deck that could play it. Now it seems it's glory days are over. A 1/2 goblin pirate that creates treasure tokens equal to the number of artifacts and enchantments your opponents control, which could easily provide an advantage for the rest of the game, all for just 2 mana. It's no suprise that this card became the most expensive goblin card in Magic. Some other staple cards banned in this announcement are the ever popular Mana Crypt and Jewelled Lotus, each costing £80/$100+ Nadu being banned in yet another format comes as no suprise There will be, no doubt, many cEDH players whose decks have just lost 3 very strong cards plus a...

DECK TECH: Goblin Synthesizer [Pauper]

Hello goblin enthusiasts! Welcome to another new feature of Goblin Gathering. We are going to start posting goblin brews and deck lists. This first feature will be a pauper deck based off of the popular and well-perfoming Mono-Red Synthesizer list. I already wrote about this deck back in April (2024)  when it first immerged and posted strong results in the pauper meta. The deck has had a few name changes since inception, first it was simply "Burn" then "Mono-Red Synthesizer" and now people are calling it "Mono-Red Kuldotha"  As strong a deck that it is, featuring 12 - 16 goblins, as a goblin purist I had issues with the inclusion of non-goblin creatures. So naturally I have cut some things and swapped in some more goblin centric cards. Take a look at the changes below: Left: my new goblin list. Right: the current tier 1 list As you can see the changes aren't major, and I will explain why I have made them. Number 1: Cut Voldaren Epicure and added Sarpa...
