Mogg of the Month July '24: Goblin Matron

Last month our brand new feature showcased a brand new card. This month it seemed right to feature an older card, so without further ado:

Mogg of the Month for July 2024 is Goblin Matron!

How could it not be?

This is one of, if not the most iconic goblin cards in all of Magic the Gathering™. First printed in 7th Edition then Urzas Saga, Matron has been a staple of goblin decks ever since. Initially only available to Vintage and Legacy decks, it wasn't legal in Modern until it was reprinted in Modern Horizons 1 in 2019. Since then it has enabled goblin decks to move away from the fast and aggressive "8-whack" style decks and into the more interactive midrange and combo builds.

A guaranteed "4 of" in every goblin deck. Goblin Matron allows us to search our library for any goblin card. It could be a combo piece, a silver bullet to get us out of a sticky situation, a lord effect or Ringleader, or even another Goblin Matron. Always finding exactly what we need for just 3 mana.

The Gobmother has plenty of different arts for players to choose from. I find myself preferring the Dominaria Remastered retro frame because my first foil playset was the MH1 printing.

Such an old iconic card has been written about countless times, here's what others have to said about Goblin Matron:

"What sets Goblin Matron apart is her unparalleled versatility. With her ability to tutor for any Goblin card, she provides a solution for every scenario. This flexibility makes her essential in any serious Goblin deck, ensuring that players can adapt to a wide range of matchups and board states."

"In the era of Modern Horizons and beyond, Goblin Matron has revitalized Goblin strategies. No longer confined to the hyper-aggressive "8-whack" decks, Goblin decks can now explore midrange and combo paths with greater consistency. The Matron’s ability to fetch crucial pieces like Conspicuous Snoop for combo kills, or Goblin Cratermaker for versatile removal, showcases her importance in these new archetypes. She not only facilitates a more interactive style of play but also increases the resilience and depth of Goblin strategies."

"It's not just her gameplay impact that makes Goblin Matron beloved, but also her iconic status within the Magic community. She represents the archetypal goblin: mischievous yet loyal, chaotic yet cunning. For many players, she is a nostalgic reminder of the early days of Magic, a card that has stood the test of time and remained relevant across multiple formats and generations of players."

So, let's raise a goblet of grog in honor of Goblin Matron, the Mogg of the Month for July 2024. Her continued presence in the game exemplifies the enduring appeal of the Goblin tribe and the strategic depth they offer. As long as there are Goblins, there will be a place for the Matron, leading the charge and finding the perfect card at just the right moment. Here's to many more victories under her wise and wily guidance!

Goblins are making a blast in pauper

Some of the newer goblin cards have been making a big impact on the pauper metagame. To such a degree that the main Burn deck in the format has been completely rebuilt to include some otherwise overlooked critters.

Goblin Foundations

Magic Foundations is a new set due to launch on November 15th. Replacing the old core set model, Foundations will remain Standard legal for the next 5 years. The set will bring 15 goblins into the Standard format, of which 4 of them are brand new goblins. This is very welcome after the last two set releases contained exactly zero goblins. Let's take a look at the new cards we're getting! Dropkick Bomber is definitely the one to watch out for in the latest release of goblin cards. A new goblin lord to bolster our armies is always welcome. This card will definitely see play in Standard, Pioneer and EDH, but also possibly Modern and Legacy. It's second ability can be viewed as both a way to give our goblins a bit of reach and evasion but also a construed sacrifice outlet. Courageous Goblin isn't as exciting. A 2/2 body for two mana is more than fair for an average goblin, but this would be better suited to decks with bigger creatures to support so the +1/+0 and Menace can ...

My Top 10 Goblins in Magic The Gathering™

As one of the oldest tribes in Magic The Gathering™ there are many cards available for goblin decks and it's hard to pick just 10. There are so many more brilliant goblin cards but a top 10 can't include everyone. Here are my personal Top 10 Goblin creature cards: 10. SKIRK PROSPECTOR Goblins can't do what elves do to repeatedly generate massive amounts of mana, but they can sacrifice their lives for the greater good thanks to Skirk Prospector . An incredibly useful little guy who allows us to play a three drop on turn two or sacrifice creatures in response to exile effects. You can also use his ability to sacrifice a blocker and prevent an opponent gaining life from a life link creature. There are many other creative ways to use a prospectors ability in response to a myriad of situations. 9. MOGG FANATIC The card that was so broken  that Wizards of the Coast™ has to change the way combat worked. Players would declare attacks with Mogg Fanatic and t...

UPDATED: Mogg Horizons

UPDATE: More cards have been added to this list and some rumoured cards confirmed. Modern Horizons 3 is on its way next month! While a lot of cards have been leaked and rumoured about, here is a rundown on some of the confirmed goblins in the next "straight to modern" set! Warren Soultrader is a new sac outlet. It allows us to sacrifice a creature and pay 1 life to create a treasure. Arguably worse than Skirk Prospector as it is also costing us a life point but good in that we can make any colour mana with the treasure. It has already been broken as a combo piece in Zombie decks but goblins could maybe go down the Revel in Riches combo route. Skoa, Embermage seems incredibly underpowered at 6 mana. Muxus is 6 mana and brings an awful lot more value to a game than Skoa. It is notably at common rarity so there may be a way to slot him into a pauper deck but currently the goblin community is not impressed with this goblin wizard. Mogg Mob will certainly see play in any decks tha...

DECK TECH: Goblin Synthesizer [Pauper]

Hello goblin enthusiasts! Welcome to another new feature of Goblin Gathering. We are going to start posting goblin brews and deck lists. This first feature will be a pauper deck based off of the popular and well-perfoming Mono-Red Synthesizer list. I already wrote about this deck back in April (2024)  when it first immerged and posted strong results in the pauper meta. The deck has had a few name changes since inception, first it was simply "Burn" then "Mono-Red Synthesizer" and now people are calling it "Mono-Red Kuldotha"  As strong a deck that it is, featuring 12 - 16 goblins, as a goblin purist I had issues with the inclusion of non-goblin creatures. So naturally I have cut some things and swapped in some more goblin centric cards. Take a look at the changes below: Left: my new goblin list. Right: the current tier 1 list As you can see the changes aren't major, and I will explain why I have made them. Number 1: Cut Voldaren Epicure and added Sarpa...
