Magic Foundations is a new set due to launch on November 15th. Replacing the old core set model, Foundations will remain Standard legal for the next 5 years.
The set will bring 15 goblins into the Standard format, of which 4 of them are brand new goblins. This is very welcome after the last two set releases contained exactly zero goblins.
Let's take a look at the new cards we're getting!
Dropkick Bomber is definitely the one to watch out for in the latest release of goblin cards. A new goblin lord to bolster our armies is always welcome. This card will definitely see play in Standard, Pioneer and EDH, but also possibly Modern and Legacy. It's second ability can be viewed as both a way to give our goblins a bit of reach and evasion but also a construed sacrifice outlet.
Courageous Goblin isn't as exciting. A 2/2 body for two mana is more than fair for an average goblin, but this would be better suited to decks with bigger creatures to support so the +1/+0 and Menace can be relied upon. I don't see this seeing much play in constructed formats.
Searslicer Goblin looks a lot better. This one has also been given two alternate frame treatments. Searslicers ability looks very usable in standard as a reliable way to poop out tokens. Maybe not strong enough for other formats but definitely going to be playable in Standard.
Goblin Boarders is another kinda meh card. In essence it's a tempo card that is good when you're already in front, and lackluster when you're playing catch up. No evasion and a mediocre ability means it doesn't excite me in the slightest.
So 2 out of 4 of the new goblins are definitely going to be fun to play with. Dropkick Bomber being the one card that every goblin player will be wanting to pick up a play set of.
But that's not all, out of the 11 remaining goblins in Foundations there is one VERY IMPORTANT inclusion...
Krenko, Mob Boss has been reprinted into the Standard format for the first time since 2013! Not only that, this is also the first Pioneer legal printing since the inception of the format. The fact we can now bust out Krenko in Pioneer really does excite me, probably more so than anything has done since Fury was banned in Modern. Oh and did you notice it's a new art for Krenko too?
As mentioned there are still 10 other goblins reprinted into Standard, you can see the full list here.
That's it for now.
